Services
Maxillofacial and Oral surgery now covers quite a large area in terms of surgery to the patient.
The most common operation he undertake currently is the removal of wisdom teeth. These are a frequent source of discomfort and dental problems in young people and increasingly in the more mature. Just because wisdom teeth are there does not necessarily indicate they need to be removed. The most common symptoms of wisdom tooth problems are pain and swelling due to infection.
This is called "pericoronitis". Less common problems are with cysts arising around the third molars, halitosis due to food impaction and crowding of the other teeth. Third molars can be a real problem if you have undergone orthodontic therapy and still have retained your wisdom teeth with inadequate space in the oral cavity.
The next most common surgical procedure undertaken by me is that of placing dental implants. These are to support the crown to replace missing teeth or to help retain dentures.
In addition to this Dr Paul Smedley has a sub speciality interest in arthroscopic surgery of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), Orthognathic surgery (this is surgery to move the facial bones for either cosmetic or functional reasons) pre-prosthetic surgery with re-constructive surgery of the oral cavity, All these are in addition to the routine oral surgical problems of difficult extractions, dental clearances etc. There are many other operations that he and other surgeons perform and the website only shows a sample for information purposes.
