Tanuki was the first restaurant that was opened in 1995. Tanuki is an Izakaya style restaurant. Izakaya originated from sake shops which allowed their customers to remain in the store to eat something while they were trying the sake. They are now very popular in Japan.
The style is informal and usually patrons share the food that they order and the food is traditional and delicious.
Tanuki was the first Japanese restaurant in New Zealand to have more then one sake on its menu, in fact it started with 40 different kinds and even now still has 30 types.
Tanuki also has a private function room that sits 35 people.
