Nic Foster was born on 20th July 1965 in Christchurch. He now lives in Nelson with his wife and two children.
Nic studied at NMIT in Nelson where he received a Bachelor of Visual Arts and at Ilam School of Fine Art in Christchurch where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours.
Of his paintings, Nic writes, 'My work is primarily a response to living in and experiencing the surroundings of the South Island. I am interested by the myriad of high energy coastlines, and quite intimidated by the drama of the mountainous terrain. '
'I constantly search for light and its effects on the land, I also like the texture and colour of things whilst trying all the time to capture a feeling or mood in my painting that might in turn evoke a response from a viewer.
'I am still passionate about the act of painting, and constantly look at historical works as a source of inspiration.'
