a very special place. Its waters and islands are home to outstanding
biological diversity and to those in the know, it is regarded as one of
the best places in New Zealand to view marine life.
Unsurpassed when it comes to marine mammals, more than
30 different species have been recorded in and around the Auckland
coastline. As we sail into the blue, we search for our target species,
the common dolphin, and remain vigilant for opportunistic encounters
with Bryde's whales, bottlenose dolphins and orca, otherwise known
as killer whales.
Bryde's whales are present in the Gulf throughout most of
the year and can be opportunistically viewed when in association with
feeding common dolphins.
The Hauraki Gulf is known to be an important feeding area
for this dolphin. One of only a few places in the world where common
dolphins can be viewed year round,
