Strictly Awesome Wife and i are over from the UK on a eight week holiday ,been here three weeks arrived in Wellington 11pm at night in the pelting rain over 3 hours late after train from Auckland broke down so turned up at the Richmond Guest House some 30 minutes later freezing cold and soaked, and were met at the front door by our gracious host John, who showed us into a lovely warm room and told us to change out of our wet clothes which he offered to put in a clothes dryer in the morning , then told us to come into the breakfast room next door to our room which we duly did and were greeted by a lovely cup of hot chocolate he then explained everything to us gave us maps etc',we got of to bed soon after and although the conditions outside were pretty fowl' wife and I both agreed that the greeting and the atmosphere at the Richmond was B'' awesome' yes a real welcome to Wellington, We had been recommended to the Richmond by friends who were over here at Christmas time and had told us about Johns bad luck and how he got badly disfigured in a fire at the Richmond several years previous, The guest house itself has been under going some serious refurbishment which john showed us the next morning all new plaster cornices and beautiful colonial architrave around every room. doors and windows and of course all the antiques and figurines on show , We stayed at the Richmond for four nights and to be honest we found it hard to leave a lovely spotlessly clean place we even had our own bathroom with tons' of hot water rooms. serviced daily , so for anyone heading to Wellington , the Richmond is a good bet a lovely spotlessly clean place very comfortable with free internet , easy walking to town or Tepapa Museum James McDowell Glasgow Scotland

My stay at the Richmond was a real nice experience
I had already read about John , so I knew what to expect
as a lady wrote in another review I read one can only look at him and imagine what he looked like before he was in the fire and of course what he went through after the fire and to read what some of these brave souls have written about him and the Richmond this isn't supposed to be a luxurious five star hotel but a very comfortable extremely clean value for money b&b that in my money cost me about $46 per night including breakfast , so for all you knockers out there who are blagging john I had a lovely room with a double bed and own ensuite bathroom and to be honest I was very impressed with everything lovely linen and towels plenty of hot water and free internet so to all you blaggers out there you pay for what you get so if you want five star go pay for it, you know what I'm saying '

A real pleasurable experience
Well here I am sitting on my bed using my lap top and the free wireless internet at the beautiful Richmond
I was told about this place by another traveler who had stayed there previously so I knew what to expect , but even though I had been warned as with a lot of folk I was quite shocked when I was so graciously greeted at the front door by John the owner , the warning had been about Johns misfortune in being badly burnt in a fire that occurred there some years, one cant' say much but just to look at him and try to imagine him prior to his fifty plus operations and admire the guts and determination that it must have taken to get himself and the Richmond going again what a great job he has done on both counts ,And I have to be honest and say that I am really disgusted when I read some of the other reviews putting john and the Richmond down , get over it' John runs a great business so clean he also is a collector of beautiful antiques and porcelain figurines mainly European some of which are truly amazing and are all on show around the house, Well this is my third and last night here I have a great room a great room with fresh linen and lovely towels with my own bathroom with plenty of hot water and , value fo the dollar this has to be tops out of eleven places I have stayed at so far $60 bed and breakfast for a room with its' own bathroom, so thank you john I know that you have another operation planned so god bless and keep smiling

I found this place after a long day driving and only wanted to stay a night - I made 4 out of it! It's a beautiful location, close to beautiful Mt Victoria - perfect for a walk in the morning! There's free parking, the city and all the sights are in walking distance, too, so no hassle where to put the car.
The rooms are comfortable and clean, the prices are good and it's a laid back, cosy atmosphere.
