5th August 2008 I find it a little funny how you say that the Bull & Bear is and i quote "relatively pricey" because I have been there many times and found the prices are not pricey at all. They are actually one of the cheapest priced bars i've been to in Wellington Central.
And if you had even botherd to ask what the deal was with the ply wood fence, you would know that the Bull & Bear have nothing to do with that it's the owners of the building in front of them who put it up.

17th December 2009 tucked away this is a good bar just to chill out and have a relaxed evening. had some dinner too, but they were just changing the menu - so not sure what new menu is like, but old one was great. hearty stuff! will def get the work mates together for another visit.

29th November 2007 I actually find this place ok. The food is reasonable and you get a good sized meal. Apart from the fact that you have to go up and collect your food, there isn't really any problems. I do however agree with the interior though. It is in need of some serious "queer eye for the straight guy" work! Overall though, lovely quiet bar, good for a reasonable meal if you don't want to spend alot of money and people friendly.

16th November 2007 If only the above business description was true as of Sept 2007.
The Bull and Bear is little more than a gambling den, that lacks any atmosphere, not least an English one (the only thing English about the place is the Tetley's on tap). The interior of the bar is dark and tired, most of the furniture is in need of some sort of attention. The "garden bar" is in fact a just covered smoking area sandwiched between concrete walls and a tall plywood fence. The "garden" element of the "garden bar" is absent.
The food was pricey considering its quality, mainly heavy, bland fare, and table service is disappointingly non existent, you have to collect your meals from the bar.
The range of drinks at the bar can't be faulted, although the drinks, much like the food, are relatively pricey, especially any kind of imported beer.
My reccommendation is to avoid the Bull and Bear unless you wish to spend an anti-social day gambling or there is nowhere else open in Wellington.
