Liposculpture is carried out using the technique of Tumescent liposuction, invented and developed in 1985 by American Dermatologist and Pharmacologist Dr Jeffrey Klein.
The word tumescent means swollen and firm. By injecting very dilute anesthetic and epinephrine (a small blood vessel constrictor) into subcutaneous fat, the targeted tissue becomes tumescent. The tumescent technique provides local anesthesia of subcutaneous fat and thus permits the entire liposuction procedure to be performed under local anesthetic. Tumescent anesthesia eliminates both the need for general anesthesia and the need for IV narcotics(intravenous pain killers) and sedatives.
Because tumescent local anesthesia lasts a long time, tumescent liposuction is less painful than liposuction under general anesthesia or IV sedation. With tumescent local anesthesia there is usually no post-operative nausea or vomiting that are frequently associated with general anesthesia.
Tumescent vasoconstriction (the constriction of blood vessels) is so good that the liposuction can be performed with virtually no blood loss. This is in contrast to the older forms of liposuction which were often associated with significant surgical blood loss.

Breast reduction using Tumescent Liposuction is now available at our Wellington Clinic, Wakefield Hospital, Newtown, as well as at our Christchurch Clinic.
Breast reduction has traditionally been performed with surgical intervention called mammoplasty. The procedure involves cutting out sections of the breast and usually cutting around the nipple and elevating the nipple and loose skin.
Mammoplasty is an effective and well-proven procedure. However, it does have a high reported rate of complications (10-50%) and involves a number of hours in theatre under general anesthetic. Complications can include unsatisfactory scarring, altered sensation of the nipple, difficulty or inability to breast-feed as well as others. Recovery from this procedure is slow compared with the now available option of Tumescent Liposuction, which has a reported low complication rate (about 1%).
