I have been staying at the Amora (formerly the Duxton) regularly for the past 10 years both on business and personal travel. I hadn't been there in a while since I decided to try a few of the newer places in town for a bit of a change. My wife and I recently returned here for two nights over the weekend, and I am happy to say that it still is one of our favourite places to stay in Auckland. Large airy well-appointed rooms with plenty of natural light, decent baclonies with sliding doors and opening windows, huge king beds, good kitchen facilities and very secure car parking. The fittings and general overall feeling is of quality, unlike some of the newer budget apartment/hotels on offer. There are a now a lot of apartment style accommodations in Auckland, but they can be hit and miss both with the quality of the room and the level of service - check my other reviews for further information. With the Amora I have never had a bad room. Yes it's a bit away from the newly redeveloped waterfront area, but you can get there easily with a nice 15 minute walk or a short cab ride. And anyway I think the location is actually a positive; whichever side you are on you get either a park view or a nice leafy street view. We were both really happy with our stay and wondered why we'd been trying all these other places when the Amora is so good. We will definitely be back.

"Great stay in Auckland" Reviewed February 10, 2012 NEW Great hotel, very well located yet not on the too busy queen street , close enough and close to Ponsonby. Disregard the bad reviews that scared me at first - I had two different rooms as I decided to stay another day - both perfect and the staff was very professional . Yes get a room at the back - huge difference noise wise. on a nice note, they gave me a pass to use the YMCA gym across the road - as I found their gym too small. I didn't have breakfast - as I could have my own breakfast just as I like it with the facility in the room. I would stay there again if in Auckland

"A romantic weekend away" Reviewed December 18, 2011 Booked to stay one night as this hotel was very close to the work Christmas party my husband and I were attending. Had a special offer deal that was currently being run at $199. This included a king spa suite, bubbles and chocolate on arrival, late checkout and car park so felt this was a good deal. The staff on checking in were friendly and efficient and we were very happy with our room. Lovely spa bath, needless to say we used very successfully! Room was spotless and bed very comfortable. We had room service both for an evening meal and breakfast and this was delivered promptly and still hot! The only negative I would say was that it would have been nice to have the "bubbles" delivered when we arrived in an ice bucket. We just found it in the fridge and weren't overly sure if that was part of the mini bar or part of our package. However this is a small thing in an overall very pleasant stay!

"Hey, this place is OK." Reviewed December 9, 2011 NEW I always read my fellow trip advisers reviews before staying in a hotel and this place had its fair share of bad reviews. I was delighted to find, for my stay anyway, that those guys got it wrong. I really do not have a bad word to say about this hotel. I found the staff helpful and professional. The rooms were large, clean and mine had a great big spa bath. I would not like to stay during a hot summer as there was only a small portable airconditioner in my room which would struggle to cool on hot days. The restaurant, whilst pricey, served delicious food. It is located at the top of town approx 2km away from the viaduct. I guess this was the only disappointment for me. However their are plenty of good restaurants and bars close by especially if you like Japanese food. Stayed December 2011, traveled on business

"Business stay, will choose again" Reviewed November 26, 2011 NEW Neat and what I needed for a four night business visit to Auckland. Was not interested in any of the more luxurious value-added services so cannot comment. Was neat, clean and my upgrade to a room with a spa was appreciated. Did have to use the car parking option ($20 - in my opinion is a bit rich but seems to be about the going rate for inner city hotels in most places I've visited). Simple gym/fitness room that I didn't bother using, instead I made the most of the location being up the top end of Auckland CBD / Downtown so easy to walk around (I do like walking). After a day in the office, was great to get out and about. Is only one block from Queen St or K Rd so plenty of eating and do-ing options around.

"Peaceful and comfortable" Reviewed November 1, 2011 This hotel is inner city Auckland very close to the Town Hall and Aotea Sq but you would never know it. It was very quiet. You look out on to a tree lined street and just over the back is a park. Check in was smooth The room was comfortable and clean and the view of the sky tower is stunning. The room was equipped with cooktop so you could prepare a simple meal if you wished. we had friends staying at the same hotel and met in our room for nibbles. There was enough room for the 6 of us. The breakfast was not fantastic value but we were happy with the food, and loved the individual coffee pot. We plan to return annually Marilyn S Christchurch, New Zealand

"Better than we expected" 4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2011 NEW This hotel was booked for us as part of a RWC package, so I wasn't sure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised. The room was clean and spacious with a balcony overlooking Greys Ave. Despite this, we weren't disturbed by street noise. There was a kitchenette which we didn't use, and a mini bar which we did use! There's even a washing machine for people staying longer term. We were only there for two nights. Decent breakfast selection. Good service from all employees that we encountered. I thought the location was good, backing on to Myers Park which was on the Fan Trail to Eden Park, and just a short walk to the CBD. I will recommend this hotel to my parents-in-law who are planning a trip to NZ. * Stayed October 2011, traveled as a couple MrsBison Sydney, Australia This hotel was booked for us as part of a RWC

I could not disagree more with the previous review. The Duxton in Auckland is fantastic, has great service and the rooms are really nice. I am going to assume the previous reviewer is from England... They are always complaining about stuff.

The service in this hotel is dreadful. The residents bar closes early in the evening and the room service is non existent. The staff are rude, dismissive and aggressive. The hotel reservations believe it is OK to place non-smokers in cigarette stench ridden rooms. There is nothing to recommended this hotel and hopefully this is not representative of what NZ has to offer.
