ASL is one of Australasia's leading and fastest-growing manufacturers of aluminium joinery profiles and systems. It serves an expanding network of fabricators throughout New Zealand, Australia and export markets around the Pacific and Asia.

The company has a proud history dating back to 1968 when its founder, Peter Lewis, first began producing steel windows and doors in Timaru. In the early '70s the company was producing aluminium joinery for major hydroelectric village developments in the South Island. As the business expanded, its operations spread throughout New Zealand. And in 1990 the company moved to purpose-built headquarters in Auckland.

In 2000 ASL also opened premises in Brisbane and has since expanded its network of fabricators to every state in Australia, as well as boosting its services to export markets.

Reflecting that growth, in 2002 the company's structure was updated, with ASL becoming the major operating subsidiary of a new holding company, Fairview Metal Industries Ltd (FMI), which continues to be wholly owned by the Lewis family, and which continues to follow the same business philosophy and personal values that have always guided its success - continually enhancing services to its fabricators and their customers, as well as designers and specifiers.

Today FMI is a vertically integrated group, which straddles the resource-to-market chain. It part owns Independent Extrusions (INEX), of Hamilton, which extrudes aluminium to ASL's exacting design specifications, as well as FINEX, which anodises aluminium to order. It wholly owns Powdercoating Systems Ltd (PSL), which powder coats the metal to order, and Fabtech Ltd, which manufactures specialty products using pre-finished aluminium. The group also wholly owns ASL Australia and PSL Australia.

The group now ranks as one of the biggest suppliers of aluminium joinery in NZ, and leads the market in terms of services to its fabricators and end customers - providing 24-hour turnaround on orders, the latest in both IT and business development tools, along with sophisticated technological innovations which represent the leading edge of the industry in Australasia.
