Te Urewera Treks offers a range of unique 1- to 3-day wilderness treks in the vast and magnificent indigenous forests of Te Urewera and Whirinaki, just over an hours(TM) drive from Rotorua. Our local Maori guides bring the forests alive with their extensive knowledge of the area(TM)s history, Maori legends, wildlife and traditional uses for native plants.
All treks include return shuttle to Rotorua, delicious homemade meals, accommodation (for overnight treks), and an optional hot pool dip at the end.
ONE DAY TREKS:
Whirinaki Loop Trek: enjoy a day trekking among the magnificent podocarp trees of the world-renowned Whirinaki Forest with its abundant native birdlife and crystal clear waterfalls.
Te Urewera Ridgeline: a true wilderness trek following in the footsteps of Maori ancestors. Learn about local history, Maori legends and traditional food sources, whilst enjoying fantastic views over Te Urewera National Park.
Te Urewera Trekking & Tree Planting: enjoy the morning trekking in the magnificent Whirinaki Forest and then spend the afternoon planting trees as part of a local Maori forest restoration project.
OVERNIGHT TREKS
Te Urewera Whirinaki Combination (2-day): experience the best of the Whirinaki and Te Urewera with magnificent indigenous forests and expansive views. Accommodation is in our comfortable private bush camp with hot showers.
Ultimate Te Urewera (3-day): starting in the immense Whirinaki Forest and finishing beside the beautiful Lake Waikaremoana this trek includes the two icons of Te Urewera. Accommodation is at our comfortable private bush camp and a Department of Conservation campsite.
Tree Planting Add-On: Include a half-day tree planting option in the two- and three- day trekking experiences for an extra NZ$100pp
