It was developed from different disciplines of oriental medicine, including acupuncture and herbalism, as well as nutritional and exercise programmes.

SHIATSU, like many forms of massage, works to relax and invigorate the body.

Thus SHIATSU makes use of the body's natural energy.

When used correctly it is as useful for emotional pain as it is for physical problems. The word "SHIATSU" comes from shi, meaning "finger" and atsu, meaning " pressure", although in reality SHIATSU may involve thumb, finger, elbow or even knee pressure.

To work with the body's energy the pressure must reach through the superficial layers of the body to the centre.

SHIATSU is usually given on a futon, a Japanese mattress, with the therapist and the client at floor level.

I aim to use both hands on the patient. Energy flows between the patient and me in a closed-circuit. Normally, one hand is just resting on your body, while my other hand is working.

The client remains clothed, which helps when I contact the body's energy rather than the skin.

In SHIATSU, the therapist may apply pressure to any of more than 600 traditional acupuncture points.
