After comments on "Trip Advisor" such as "Best food in New Zealand" and "Beautiful surroundings and atmosphere, awesome", I had to have dinner at the Riverstone on my recent visit to Karamea.
It did not disappoint. Even my aperitif came in a gorgeous glass so it looked like a work of art!
The focus seems to be lovely simple, very fresh, well cooked food . My entree of scallops wrapped in bacon was the perfect combination of crispiness and succulence why my husband throughly enjoyed his plump whitebait pattie.
Our mains were equally good (there is a menu shown on the Riverstone website).
When it came to dessert, I had a lemon cream with a rhubarb sauce and blueberries - very pretty and yummy too. My husband ordered the gooey chocolate cake. When we ordered our host advised this would take slightly longer than my dessert to prepare. We did not wait very long when he reappeared to let us know that a new stove had just been installed and had not produced quite the result they wanted so this would be a few minutes longer. He also added that because we had to wait, desserts would be on the house. Very quickly, however, a perfect gooey chocolate cake arrived.
I really recommend the Riverstone. It has a lovely setting (huge fireplace, big wooden beams, outside deck overlooking the river...). The service was excellent and so was the food!
