Steeped in history and situated next to beautiful Hagley Park, Dorset House Christchurch Backpackers Hostel is relaxing, spacious and elegant, and is well-equipped with all that a backpacking hostel traveller could need for a comfortable stay. Dorset House offers old-fashioned charm mixed with modern comfort and a wide range of hostel facilities. That makes us a great choice for quality central Christchurch backpacker accommodation.
Recently refurbished, without losing its essential character, Dorset House is a peaceful environment from which to enjoy Christchurch. Set among flower gardens, Dorset House is steeped in the character of early Christchurch pioneers. It was built in 1871 as a home for the wealthy timber merchant, J B Way, and once featured 27 rooms and Italian marble fireplaces. It has been lovingly restored, and is a slice of Christchurch's past that we are proud to share with our hostel guests.
Backpacker rooms are freshly cleaned and bathed in afternoon sun. All are within 3-7 metres of a bathroom. Dorset House caters for backpacker travellers who wish to experience up-market hostel facilities at budget prices. There are no bunks, and all beds are made. We have a kitchen and guest laundry available for use. Free WiFi internet is available in the lounge and kitchen. Late check in is easily arranged.
The lounge - the 'Old Ballroom' - is a large room with comfortable couches and is a great space for relaxing. Facilities include a free pool table, board games, TV, DVDs, Cable TV, books for exchange and a stereo. There are computers for guest internet use, and free WiFi access. Dorset House offers a full travel desk.
From Dorset House, it's a 15-minute stroll to Cathedral Square; or walk along the river to reach other attractions such as the Botanic Gardens, museum, the Arts Centre, local art galleries and markets. we are also only one and a half hours from world class ski fields and nature sight seeing such as whale and Dolphin watching.
