Bookings are required, but with two branches available, you will be attended to in no time.
The dental hygienists role in the practice is to work with the dentist to meet the oral health needs of patients. The range of services offered by dental hygienists varies depending on the type of practice in which they work. However they are mainly concerned with:
- Periodontal (gum) health
- Helping patients achieve the best oral hygiene practices they are able to perform
- Advising patients on preventative oral health care
- Application of preventative materials to the teeth and gums (e.g topical fluoride treatments and fissure sealants)
Some of the services provided by dental hygienists may include:
- Information gathering such as assessment of oral health conditions (e.g plaque and calculus deposits, bleeding gums, oral ulcerations), taking and/or reviewing the health history, dental and periodontal charting, and diet assessments
- Removing calculus (hard deposits) and plaque (bacteria) from all surfaces of the teeth
- Applying preventive materials to the teeth (e.g sealants and flourides)
- Teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (e.g tooth brushing technique, correct use of dental floss and other instruments that may be used to clean between the teeth)
- Counseling patients regarding good nutrition and the impact that a poor diet can have on oral health
- Assessment of susceptibility to tooth decay using specially designed kits
- Taking impressions of patients teeth for study casts (models of teeth used by dentists to evaluate patient treatment needs)
- Tooth whitening procedures
- Performing documentation and office management activities
Some dental hygienists have undergone further training and are able to:
- Take and develop dental radiographs (x-rays)
- Administer local anaesthetic
