I remember Smith & Caughey from years ago. I was 5 years old when I first visited with my great aunt, and it was one of my favourite places to be. I think she had a friend or sister who worked there. I loved the beautiful chiffon scarves, the hosiery, the perfumes and pretty umbrellas and all the girly stuff. This was a store that could make any little girl feel like a princess. I grew older and Smith and Caughey became a place to visit and continue to dream. As the first woman in NZ to work as a petrol pump attendant I was not very well received when I visited on pay days. The shop assistants chose to turn their backs on me or simply refused to serve me when I had enough money to buy them. Too bad about that, but the pleasant memories still put a smile on my face.
