I worked at Porter Heights in 1992 when we had one of the most powerful winter storms in decades. We were literally covered and closed for one week until a D9 Dozer dug us out. There was snow on New Brighton Beach and throughout downtown Christchurch. Porters has incredible terrain and no crowds. In 1992 there were only three primary tow ropes, and no chair lifts. The area is breathtaking, especially from the top with views to Mt. Cook and the lakes surounding. You can log some serious vertical in a day if you chose. 10 of us shared a small house in Springfield and had a great Maori couple with small kids as our neighbors. We managed to stay warm enough in the house with coal proided by Evan our neighbor. I miss this place and what it is all about. I intend to return soon for a long stay, possibly even permanently. Make the opportunity of a lifetime and visit Porters. and other parts of NZ. You will not be disapointed. Paz y Amor and see you soon. Eric Schwing
